My crosstab query did not get upsized using the wizard. What do I need to do in Access Project to get the same result?hi John, do SQL Server does not (still) include CROSSTAB query including PIVOT/TRANSFORM syntax SQL Server 2005 will include PIVOT/UNPIVOT feature, btu, till it releases, you have to resort on alternate solution.. SQL Server MVP Itzik Ben Gan released an excellen article about this (missing) feature, along with a stored procedure to dynamically return result sets according to specified pivot settings you can read for free at http://www.winnetmag.com/SQLServer/Article/ArticleID/15608/15608.htmlYou can also take a look at RAC (http://rac4sql.net). It provides similar syntax for Access users. to PIVOT/TRANSFORM
package. I have determined through my own trial-and-error process that our installation works on NT4 with the following additions / upgrades: - Service Pack 6a - Internet Explorer 6.0 - MDAC 2.5, followed by - MDAC 2.6, followed by - MDAC 2.7, followed by - Jet 4.0 SP3 Win95 is a different story. Our software requires a minimum of Internet Explorer 4.01 (Service Pack 2) under Win95 to install but this is not enough for MSDE 1.0. Even after installing MDAC 2.5, 2.6, 2.7 and Jet 4.0 SP3 on our Win95 test machine it still doesn't work. I have even tried Win95 with IE5.5, all the MDAC's and Jet 4.0 with MSDE refusing to fully install. Am I missing something that Win95 needs? TIA hi, I no longer have a Win95 machine ( :D ) but I do remember MSDE 1.0

B, would it be better to have one database for ease of getting the information I need? Any thoughts would be great. Thank you in advance. Petehi Pete, If you think the sum of your db will exceed the 2gb then you have to split them it's not a matter of instances, or it can be, as the governor kicks in, delaying all active workloads, when more of 8 concurrent of them are running but remember that additional instances have an impact too, actually on memory resources they come not for free so, at every context switch, you will see some memory overhead if you are on memory pressure 3 dbs on the same instance can be queried and joined with no problems but ownership chaining "features", where youl'' need "linked servers

seem to happen on all 98 installations. There is a workaround for (google that one).Plus, in our experience, it's much slower and way less reliable on FAT32 than on NTFS. FAT32 is great for sequential access, not good for random (as in most databases). NTFS is a journalled filesystem. Words like "cross-linked clusters" etc. are not words you want associated with your database. If you are going to use it on Win98, I'd suggest leaving AutoClose database option on for safety. file size for the primary datafile? The size is currently at 1.8 GB Can someone help with some ideas for getting around this error. Hardee Mahoney Washington, DC USAhi, MSDE has a limit of 2gb for each database (data file(s) only) Thank you for your reply. That explains it.Remember that first, bulk copy does not write to the transaction log. Next, SQL Express has twice (4GB) data capacity. However, if you're running out of space with MSDE, I would reconsider what you're storing in the database. Are you using it to store BLOBs? If so, consider storing those on a file share and putting the path in the database. -- ____________________________________ William (Bill) Vaughn Author, Mentor, Consultant Microsoft MVP INETA Speaker www.betav.com/blog/billva www.betav
Hi, I have a trigger on a MSSQL table that performs data validation on an Insert. Based on some simple logic (that is correct), when i recieve invalid data, I used: RAISEERROR ("My error message",18,1) to raise an error that I want my VB.Net ODBC error handler to handle. I have tried this with QueryAnalyzer and my message is being returned as it should be, but my error handler is not detecting it. Is there a reason why? Any help or suggestions would be greately appreciated! MattHello, You can try to put a SET NOCOUNT ON as the first line of your procedure (at least for stored procedures and VB6 it is OK) Marc Allard Allcomp
greetings I need to develop an .NET CF application for pocket pc that uses sql server ce to store data. What are the scenarios that SQL Server 2000 and SQL Server CE are free to use and distribute to customers along with applications? What are the restrictions? Where can I find information about licences of this SQL Servers, and distribuitions packages, etc? LumLum, Please see my reply to you on the compactframework newsgroup.

Hi, I'm new to programming and SQL, studying from a book. I have VS2003 Enterprise, MSDE2000, and I've installed the samples from VS, northwind and pubs. I have WinXP Pro SP2. When I try to create a connection from VS and "select the database on the server" I get this error: - [DBNETLIB][ConnectionOpen(Connect())] - SQL server does not exist or access denied and then: - Login Failed. Catalog information cannot be retrieved. SQL is running on the PC, and start on the services, and I don't know where the problem is. When I open the SQL Server Service Manager I type on the server the name of my notebook, but I don't get anything on the list of services. Please help me!!! Thank you very much in advance Albertohi Alberto, please have a look
2000 to download. One's name ends with "Release A" and it's volume is about 42 mb (MSDE2000A). The other is without "Relase A" and its size is around 70 mb (sql2kdesksp3). Can anyone reveal the differences between the two?hi, the differences are bot in the EULA and related rights to install it, as long as the packages them selves.. MSDE Rel A is free to download, install and use and will only install fresh instances of MSDE 2000 updated at the sp 3a level.. sql2kdesksp3.exe can both install fresh instances of MSDE 2000 updated at the sp 3a level and upgrade previuosly installed instances at that sp level, though the size difference.. it's use is related to other EULAS, such as being eligible for having a valid SQL Server licence, VS.Net license
A new table or index is usually allocated pages from mixed extents. When the table or index grows to the point that it has eight pages, it is switched to uniform extents. If you create an index on an existing table that has enough rows to generate eight pages in the index, all allocations to the index are in uniform extents. Hello!! Can you advice me some free MSDE tools (like database manager, query interface ) that can be found over web? Thanks in advance for your help!! Ambros Morenohttp://www.aspfaq.com/2442
Hello all, I've been running msde 2000 (the version that comes with visual studio) with a very simple database for months. I use Enterprise manager to manage it. Last week I installed xp sp2, but there wasn't enough disk space so I moved a bunch of stuff around, and deleted some things that I couldn't see a need for. I keep all of my non-OS software (including the 2 mentioned above) on a different partition so they should have been safe, but I did "clean up" some stuff in the 'documents and settings\all users \application data' tree. After much fussing I finally got sp2 to install (which I didn't want anyway,

Please advise how to solve this issue. Samuel Leehi Samuel, please verify Remote Procedure Call service is up and running.. go to START > CONTROL PANEL > ADMINISTRATIVE TOOLS and open SERVICES. /she has been granted access to the instance, or verifying membership to granted Windows groups that have been granted login permissions so you can verify an actual login exists for the required user.. you can perform that via straight Transact-SQL code (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q325003) or using graphical tools MSDE does not provide them, but perhaps you can have a look at a free prj of mine, DbaMgr2k, available at http://www.asql.biz/en/DbaMgr.aspx by default, for security reasons, MSDE installs allowing trusted connections only, thus standard SQL Server logins are not granted access rights, but you can modify this behaviour, both at install time as later, as described in http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;285097 ..

amp;quot;?Stop doing that. Use sp_spaceused in Query Analyzer, then you can tell it to update statistics as well (giving you an accurate result), which EM will never do. First, you need to realize why there is 900 mb of free space in the data file. Did you have a huge table and delete it? Has this database been around for 20 years and never been defragged or reindexed? Or is it this large due to normal volume (maybe you have huge bulk inserts and then trim the data down constantly)? In many cases, getting the 900 mb will not be a good decision because (a) the database will likely need to grow again, and (b) when it does, your application will feel the performance hit. is no firewall on that server and I'm in the same subnet trying to connect. has named on we and one.Hi Claus, Please use the 'ODBCPING' command line utility to check the connectivity. The syntax is odbcping -Sservername -Uusername -Ppassword This tool is loaded with SQL Server client utilities and would be available on your system. Please do not leave any space betweeb -S and servername, -S is caps (case sensitive). Soma Sekhara ReddyHi Claus, I might need more inputs to trouble shoot this issue. Before this, you could try Re- registering the MSDE Server in your Enterprise Manager. Please use the Register SQL Server Wizard. For the sake of Clarity, I am outling the steps here. The dtsrun.exe utility is also provided, but can only be used to run existing Data Transformation Services (DTS) packages against the copy of MSDE installed by your application; it cannot be used to develop new DTS packages. There's not enough information in your post to determine whether or not it's legal, but in the vast majority of instances it's not and I'm told that it requires a room full of lawyers and white board to figure out. There are a bunch of 3rd-party tools out there that might be of use. Have a look at Aaron's list at http://www.aspfaq.com/show.asp?id=2442.Found it. The install command that I used: SETUP SAPWD

something I can do to get this software installed? Thanks for any assistance provided.hi Jack, you probably have better ask your distibutor for futher hints but . MSDE requires File & Printer sharing to be enabled and the Server service to be up and running.. please verify this requirements are satisfied . perhaps you can try installing MSDE yourself from Microsoft free package available for free download at http://www.microsoft.com/sql/msde/downloads/default.mspx and passing it the additional parameter /L*v "c:\MSDELog.txt" which will enable verbose logging of the installation process, that will result in an about 2mb text file (for succesfull installation) you can inspect for RETURN VALUE 3 entries indicating troubles about 10/15 lines before

I have installed MSDE A on W2K Pro with the following command line: c:\msderela\setup.exe sapwd= mypassword securitymode=SQL instancename=myinstanceName This works. I can then setup ODBC using the named instance successfully. I can start/stop the server using the SQL Server manager utility. I can connect to the server using Query Analyizer. Any suggestion?after un-installing and re-installing 2 times I can now connect using EM

If you install additional instances, they have an instance name and are referred to by servername\instancename. When

We also recommend that for TCP/IP, you use a static port assignment. For applications that use a named instance of MSDE with dynamic TCP port selection enabled, you can open the UDP port 1434 and the TCP/IP
;s possible for this to take a minute or more so the program that is doing the insert will appear to hang. This isn't a good user experience so a lot of DBA's monitor the free space and manually increase the database size when it is getting low. This is more work for the DBA but it makes the user's experience better (and also prevents the call to the DBA in the middle of the night because an application appears to be hung while SQL Server is growing the database file).Thank You for your replies. Roger, your reply was particularly insightful. Ok so I guess there is not much reason to sweat. I just wanted to monitor to activity on the database in order to estimate how soon we'll have to switch to SQL Server 2000 (thanks to the 2GB limit) and plan the
; stands for the DB name used by ODBC (In my Java application I'm using ODBC, to connect to particular DB). So when I'm adding a record to this table, for instance: 1, "MySQL", "root", "password" ODBC || MSDE || JDBC changes the values by adding free space to fill all the field's spaces (Instead of "MySQL" it adds "MySQL "). It seems like some component doesn't understand that I'm using varchar(20), not char. For instance, when I'm using MySQL DB server, such problem doesn't introduce itself Does anyone know how to manage this? Thank you, AudriusWhen I tried to insert data into MSDE table using console, everything worked fine. The data occupies exactly as it should ("MySQL"
